Welcome to Pisa: the travel guide to Pisa city and surroundings

An ancient Maritime Republic, Pisa was founded and has developed along the Arno River. This provincial capital and seat of an archbishop is one of Italy's and Tuscany’s most famous cities of art, well renowned all over the world for its medieval monuments. Pisa is a great city of culture: here is a famous University and here was born Galileo Galilei, who has given his name to the city’s airport. Its suggestive "lungarni" have fascinated famous writers, including Byron, Shelley, Montesquieu, Leopardi, D’Annunzio and Foscolo.

The Gioco del Ponte is one of Pisa’s main folkloric events, an ancient competition involving two teams of people wearing costumes and struggling with clubs. At present an interesting choreography of lights has substituted the battle. The event takes place on June 16th, the day of San Ranieri. On the next day Pisa pays homage to its patron saint with the Regata di San Ranieri, an ancient rowing competition taking place in the Arno river and involving the quarters Pisa is divided into: Sant’Antonio, San Martino, Santa Maria and San Francesco.

Pisa’s historical quarters have maintained their medieval identity. Just walk on the streets and lanes and discover highly suggestive corners and squares, magnificent ancient churches and trattorias where to taste typical Tuscan dishes. Four are Pisa’s historical quarters: Sant’Antonio and San Martino stretch on the southern bank of the Arno, whereas Santa Maria and San Francesco are situated on the northern bank of the river.

Amongst the most important monuments in Pisa are the Cathedral, situated in Piazza del Duomo and UNESCO’s World Heritage Site, the Leaning Tower, one of Italy’s most renowned monuments, the Baptistery, which is the largest in Italy, and the Monumental Cemetery.

Piazza del Duomo, also known as Piazza dei Miracoli, Piazza dei Cavalieri, where is the Scuola Normale Superiore, and Piazza Carrara, one of Pisa’s most ancient squares, are some of the city’s most important squares.

The 16th-century Church of Santo Stefano, the Church of Santa Maria della Spina, a wonderful example of Pisan Gothic style, the Church of San Paolo a Ripa d’Arno, also called Duomo Vecchio, and the Church of San Francesco are well worth a visit.

Pisa’s most important museums are the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, housing a valuable collection of paintings, the Museo delle Sinopie, in Piazza del Duomo, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, the Museo della Navigazione and the Museo di Palazzo Reale.

Well worth a visit are the surroundings of Pisa with their hilly hinterland and the coast, rich in a lush and unspoilt vegetation. The Parco Naturale Regionale Migliarino-San Rossore-Massaciuccoli stretches along the coast. The seaside resorts of Marina di Pisa, Tirrenia and Calambrone are just a few kilometres from each other. The Certosa of Pisa at Calci, the thermal establishments in San Giuliano Terme and the medieval town of Cascina are worth a visit as well.
