The quarter of Sant’Antonio stretches on the southern bank of the Arno river, which flows across Pisa. Rich in clothes shops, bookshops, music shops, chemistries’, banks and cafes, Corso Italia is the main street in this part of the city. The narrow streets and lanes intersecting Corso Italia lead to small squares with benches. The Town Hall stands at the beginning of Corso Italia and overlooks Lungarno Gambacorti and the Ponte di Mezzo. On the right of the town hall, in Via dei Banchi are the galleries that periodically host a street market. In Piazza Sant’Antonio is the bus station, whereas Via Corte Bracci and Via Mascagni lead to Pisa railway station. This part of the city is rich in hotels, restaurants and cafes and is well connected to the airport, which is reached in five minutes when there is no traffic.
QUARTER OF SAN MARTINO
The quarter of San Martino is a peaceful area of Pisa’s historical centre. It stretches on the southern bank of the Arno river, close to the railway station. Here are plenty of shops, cafes and pubs together with the provincial headquarters of the "Banca d’Italia" and, on the southern edge, of the "Camera di Commercio". On Saturdays the market animate the streets of the quarter with its stalls selling mainly fresh fruit and vegetables, handicraft products and clothes. Via San Martino is the heart of the quarter and is reached from Ponte alla Vittoria and Piazza Guerrazzi. Via San Martino runs parallel to Lungarno Galileo Galilei and leads to Via dei Banchi and then to Corso Italia. Walking down Piazza Guerrazzi towards Viale Benedetto Croce, on the right is the Giardino Scotto, a green area at the centre of the ramparts of the so-called Cittadella Nuova. The Cittadella Nuova is a seat of entertainment that hosts important shows, festivals and concerts. During the summer the Cittadella Nuova is converted into an open-air cinema. Ponte della Vittoria leads to the Palazzo dei Congressi and to the Faculty of Economics.
QUARTER OF SANTA MARIA
The quarter of Santa Maria is situated on the northern bank of the Arno river and is the heart of the city, from both the artistic and historical point of view. Here is the well-renowned Piazza dei Miracoli, realised between the 11th and the 16th century, with the celebrated Leaning Tower, the Duomo and the Baptistery. Nearby are also the Monumental Cemetery, the Museo delle Sinopie and the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo. Numerous faculties of the University of Pisa are situated in this part of the city: in Via Santa Maria, which connects Piazza dei Miracoli to the lungarni, stands the building housing the Faculty of Foreign Languages. Heading towards Lungarno Pacinotti, in the last side street on the right, that is Via del Collegio Ricci, is the Faculty of Humanities. Piazza dei Cavalieri is reached in about two minutes through Via dei Mille and then Via Corsica. In the wonderful square stand the seat of the Order of the Knights of Saint Stephen, the Scuola Normale Superiore and the tower of Count Ugolino, who is renowned for being mentioned in Dante’s "Inferno". The Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Political Sciences, in Via Serafini, are reached from Piazza dei Cavalieri through Via San Frediano. Via Giosuè Carducci leads to a part of Pisa called Borgo Largo. Past Piazza Garibaldi and the lungarni are the characteristic galleries of Borgo Stretto, with plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants for tourists to relax. Close to Piazza dei Miracoli and to the Leaning Tower, in Via Bonanno Pisano, is the Ospedale Santa Chiara. Heading towards Piazza Garibaldi and the lungarni, a side street of Borgo Stretto leads to Piazza delle Vettovaglie, a very nice square bordered with galleries, cafes and restaurants for romantic candle light dinners.
QUARTER OF SAN FRANCESCO
The quarter of San Francesco is on the northern bank of the Arno river, adjacent to the quarter of Santa Maria. Although less touristy than the latter, the quarter of San Francesco is nevertheless rich in pubs, restaurants, pizzerias and kebab shops. This is the cultural district of Pisa, with the Teatro Verdi and the Cinema Odeon. In the quarter are also the Museo Nazionale di San Matteo, the Court of Pisa, the Questura (the Police headquarters) and the provincial Carabinieri headquarters. The Scuola di Perfezionamento Sant’Anna is in Piazza Martiri della Libertà, also known as Piazza Santa Caterina due to the presence of the homonymous church. The Faculty of Mathematics is in Via Buonarroti. In Piazza San Paolo all’Orto is the Multiplex Cinema Odeon, whereas at the end of Via Giuseppe Verdi is the Teatro Verdi. Close to the theatre is the Court of Pisa.
